How do musicians get discovered now a days?

Back in the day it would be you sending a demo tape in to the company, but now, they dont take unsolicited material. My friend is a singer/songwriter/pop/rock artist. He sounds like John Mayer with real problems. I would certainly like to help him out. thanks again everyone.
