How well do kevlar (bulletproof) vests actually protect you (experianced military personnel please)?

Well im thinking about joining the US Army and i was just wondering how well the vests actually protect your vitals? I know there will be many advances in technology in the next 4 years but i was wondering about now? Thanks!
